The Bordeaux is a short, stocky mastiff with a huge, heavy, broad, wrinkled head. The head is a very important feature when evaluating this breed.
The short soft coat comes in shades of fawn to mahogany with a black or red mask.
Today the Bordeaux has a good and calm temperament. It is extremely loyal, patient and devoted to his family. Fearless and confrontational with strangers, he is a first class watch and guard dog. This breed can be very aggressive with other dogs.
The French Mastiff breed in general, is one of the oldest breeds still around today. The name roughly translates to powerful. They are descendents of the ancient Alaunt and Molosser. It is believed that the Mastiff was first brought to England in the 6th century. Their primary use was for bull-baiting, hunting wild boar and hogs, and bear-baiting. Since being outlawed, the breed has undergone a transformation to the ideal family pet.
