Belgian Laekenois Breed Profile

The body is sturdy and well proportioned. The ears appear small and are set high on the head. The muzzle and head are fringed, giving him a shaggy, woolly look. The hindquarters are muscular, without looking heavy.

Colors include a range from fawn to mahogany with a black overlay.

They are serious and watchful with strong protective and territorial instincts. Some are very shy or sensitive.

The Belgian Lakenois originated in Belgium as a herding and flock guarding dog at the Royal Castle of Laeken. They are the oldest and rarest and the foundation for the Belgian Shepherd Dogs. Lakenois have a long history of military service during both World Wars, and continued to work as police dogs long after the wars.
