Description
The largest of the Japanese Spitz-type breeds, the Akita, is a powerful, solid, well-proportioned and distinctive looking dog. Strong and muscular with a flat, heavy head and strong, short muzzle. The Akita is slightly longer than he is tall with a broad, deep chest and level back.

Origin
The Akita has a long history in Japan, and is considered to be one of the countries best Natural Treasures. They were companions and guards for the Shogun; the imperial leaders of the country. AkitaÆs were bred for guard duty, hunting, and herding. They are best known for their ability to take down the Yezo bear. The Akita first arrived in the US in 1937, as a gift to Helen Keller.
