Belgian Laekenois Breed Profile

Description

The body is sturdy and well proportioned. The ears appear small and are set high on the head. The muzzle and head are fringed, giving him a shaggy, woolly look. The hindquarters are muscular, without looking heavy.

Coloring

Colors include a range from fawn to mahogany with a black overlay.

Temperament

They are serious and watchful with strong protective and territorial instincts. Some are very shy or sensitive.

Origin

The Belgian Lakenois originated in Belgium as a herding and flock guarding dog at the Royal Castle of Laeken. They are the oldest and rarest and the foundation for the Belgian Shepherd Dogs. Lakenois have a long history of military service during both World Wars, and continued to work as police dogs long after the wars.
