The Hovawart looks very similar to a golden retriever with a powerful, rounded, broad forehead. The front legs are straight and the long haired dense coat is wavy, but laying flat.

The Hovawart is a very old German working dog breed. The breed has been linked to several genetic crossbreeding with German Shepherds, Newfoundlands, and Leonbergers. In 1937 the German Kennel Club officially recognized the Hovawart.
