The Chinese Crested, despite the name, originated in Africa where they were called African Hairless Terriers. Chinese mariners first brought them to China in the late 1700s, and the name quickly changed to Chinese Crested. Crests were popular with the port and cape towns in Africa and China, and can still be found there in great numbers.
