The Coton de Tulear originated in Madagascar dating back as far as the 16th century. An ancestor of the modern day Coton, the Coton de Reunion survived a shipwreck of the port of Tulear, Madagascar and swam to shore. There the Reunion mated with the native island terriers, creating the Coton de Tulear. Cotons were prized possessions of the Merina, the ruling monarchy. In 1974, biologist Dr. Robert Jay Russell was allowed to take the first breeding stock to America.
