Description

They have a rectangular body shape thats length from shoulder to base of tail is greater than height at withers. Their coats are thick and waterproof and can be either long or short in length.

Coloring

Several colors are permitted, with a single predominant color. The predominant colors are: shades of tan (ranging from cream to reddish brown), chocolate brown, gray, black. White markings should always accompany the predominant color.

Temperament

Icelandic Sheepdogs are tough, yet playful, inquisitive and energetic. They are very alert and will always give visitors an enthusiastic welcome.

Origin

The Icelandic Sheepdog originated in Scandinavia and was brought to Iceland in 874 by Viking settlers. They are considered to be the only native dog of Iceland. During the mid-1900s the breed came close to extinction, which forced Iceland to import the breed from England and the United States to increase the numbers in its native homeland.
