Borzoi

Purebred Dog Breed

Description

The Borzoi was originally bred for the coursing of wild game on more or less open terrain, relying on sight rather than scent. To accomplish this purpose, the Borzoi needed particular structural qualities to chase, catch and hold his quarry. Special emphasis is placed on sound running gear, strong neck and jaws, courage and agility, combined with proper condition. The Borzoi should always possess unmistakable elegance, with flowing lines, graceful in motion or repose. Males, masculine without coarseness; bitches, feminine and refined.

Coloring

Any color, or combination of colors, is acceptable.

Temperament

The Borzoi is a sweet, intelligent dog, they are proud and self aware and are extremely loyal to their family. They are quite affectionate with people they know well. They are more free-thinking, and less willing to please humans than some breeds. They are, however, very intelligent, and capable learners. They are quiet dogs, rarely barking. Like all other sighthounds, they are very fast, and have little-to-no territorial instinct.

Origin

The history of the Borzoi first appears in 1260 A.D. However, the first written description of the Borzoi did not come about until 1650. In the past, Borzois were bred for their speed. Borzois had an unstable life due to their relationships with the nobility in the past.
