Temperament

The American English Coonhound is alert, friendly, confident, sociable, and watchful. They are avid hunters, and have great stamina. Coonhounds are quite versatile and can be competitive when tracking prey with other dogs. They do require regular exercise; daily runs or walks, fetch games in an open field or chase games in the back yard. Boredom or lack of exercise can cause a Coonhound to become destructive.

Origin

The American English Coonhound originated in the southeastern United States, around Virginia area. They were bred from American and English Foxhounds and other European hunting breeds. It is believed, though not widely documented, that the Bloodhound was interbred to increase the dogs scent ability and thus helped create the breed of today.
